Available, Not Perfect

Most people think serving is something you do when you have extra time or extra energy. Like it’s optional or less important. Or something for people who don’t have anything “bigger” going on.

But that’s not how Jesus saw it and it’s not how God works. The story of Gideon in Judges 6 starts with a nation in trouble and a guy who’s hiding. Gideon isn’t a leader and he isn’t looking for attention. He’s actually trying to stay off the radar but God finds him anyway and says, “I’m with you and I’m gonna use you.”

And what does Gideon say? “You’ve got the wrong guy.” Gideon thought God was looking for a list of qualifications, but God was really just looking for a yes.

Scripture says, “The Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon.” And it happened not because Gideon got more talented or more confident, but because God filled the space Gideon was insecure, but willing to give Him. It was about availability.

Jesus did the same. At the height of His influence—with all authority in heaven and earth—He didn’t ask for applause. He picked up a towel, He washed feet, and He served others.

If the most powerful person in the room chooses to serve, what does that say you?

The truth is your gift, your position, and your influence is not for you, it’s for others. Which seems completely backwards. The world tells us to hoard money, to self protect, and to build platforms. But the way of Jesus is completely different. He gives, so we can give. He blesses, so we can be a blessing. He saves us, so we can serve others.

And if you’ve ever thought, “Someone else could do it better,” you’re not alone. Gideon thought that too, but he still said yes. And look what God did.

It’s really not about waiting until you feel ready, it’s about evaluating your availability. Because God doesn’t wait for perfect people, He moves toward the “yes.”
