Jesus Is Enough

You know the feeling of not quite measuring up. You try to do the right thing, you try to be better than you were yesterday, or you’re trying to keep your life pointed in the right direction. But somewhere in the back of your mind there’s still that quiet feeling that it might not be enough.

So you push harder and you promise to do better next time. The message at the center of Christianity says something surprisingly different.

When Jesus hung on the cross, He spoke a single word recorded in John 19:30. In English we read the phrase “It is finished.” But in the original language it was one word: tetelestai. In the ancient world, that word was written across receipts when a debt had been fully paid. Once it was stamped on the record, the account was closed, paid in full.

That’s the word Jesus chose in His final moment on the cross.

He wasn’t talking about His own debt. He had none. The claim of the gospel is that He was settling yours. You may have been taught to think of faith like a race. Run well enough, stay disciplined enough, improve your life enough, and maybe you’ll reach the finish line with God. It’s actually not really like that at all.

Isaiah wrote that Jesus was pierced for our rebellion and crushed for our sins (Isaiah 53:5–6). Paul later explained that God canceled the record of our charges and nailed it to the cross (Colossians 2:13–14). In other words, the race you’ve been trying to win is already finished.

Hebrews 12:2 calls Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. He started the work, and He completed it. And after the resurrection He sat down at the right hand of God, a sign that there was no more work left to do. You don’t get good with God by running a better race, you receive it by trusting the One who already finished it.

Ephesians 2:8–9 explains it simply. God saves you by grace when you believe. It’s not a reward for good things you’ve done. It’s a gift.

The message of the resurrection isn’t that you must become enough, the message is that Jesus is enough.
