What God is Actually Looking For
When people evaluate someone’s potential, they usually look for obvious things.
Talent.
Education.
Confidence.
Charisma.
We do it when hiring leaders., choosing who to follow, and even when we are evaluating ourselves. But the Bible tells us something different about what God is actually looking for.
David is one of the most talked about people in the entire Bible. He defeats giants, rallies armies, writes songs of worship, and eventually becomes the king of Israel. From his family line, Jesus Himself would later be born. But when David first appears in Scripture, none of that has happened yet. He is just a shepherd boy working in the fields.
When it’s time to gather everyone to select Israel’s next king, David is not even invited to the gathering. His father lines up his older brothers instead. They look strong, impressive, and capable. It’s obvious one of them must meet the qualifications…until God interrupts.
“The LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.”
1 Samuel 16:7
This is one of the most important truths in the Bible about how God works. God does not evaluate your life the way the world does. The world focuses on visibility, reputation, and success but God looks deeper. He looks at your heart. God cares about our motives, the things we choose to pursue, and the direction that our life is moving.
So enter David, and his life is far from perfect. David’s story includes failure, regret, and moments he would surely want to forget that ever happened. Yet through all of it, God repeatedly describes him with a phrase almost no one else receives.
A man after God’s own heart.
Most of us spend a lot of energy trying to improve the outside of our lives. We polish our image, build accomplishments, and try to appear like we have everything together. But God begins somewhere entirely different. He begins with the heart.
